Young and Restless character biography
Phyllis Newman has a history of making the wrong decisions when it comes to the men she loves. She tricked Danny Romalotti into thinking that he was the father of her child, and even broke him up from his wife so that she could marry him.
As time passed, Phyllis’ dirty tricks caught up to her. Her son, Daniel’s, true paternity was revealed. Danny divorced Phyllis, and won full custody of Daniel. Phyllis hired her friend, Michael Baldwin, to defend her, but he was no match for Danny’s attorney, and ex-wife, Christine Blair. Phyllis was devastated that she had lost Daniel, and left Genoa City.
A year later, she returned and soon found herself a new relationship with Jack Abbott. Their relationship was often complicated, as they worked for competing businesses. She would also suffer a miscarriage, and became unable to carry another child to term.
Diane Jenkins, jealous of Phyllis, set her up so that it would appear as if Phyllis had set the Abbott pool house on fire with Diane inside. Phyllis was charged with attempted murder, but was eventually cleared. She and Jack still wouldn’t be able to work things out, and divorced. As Diane left town, Phyllis found a new foe in Drucilla Winters. Her son, Daniel, had returned to town and began a relationship with Drucilla’s daughter, Lily. When Daniel was charged with murder for the death of Cassie Newman, Daniel and Lily ran off together, and Phyllis followed. Phyllis hired her old foe, Christine, to defend Daniel. Daniel was cleared when it came to light that Cassie had actually been driving and Daniel was only in the passenger seat. During Daniel’s trial, Phyllis found herself leaning on Jack once again. They decided to give their relationship another chance.
However, it wouldn’t last long when she began having an affair with Nicholas Newman…Cassie’s father and Jack’s former stepson. Nick and Phyllis began to develop real feelings for each other. Nick’s wife, Sharon, soon became aware of their affair. Nick attempted to fix his marriage with Sharon, but once Phyllis discovered she was pregnant, Sharon and Nick divorced. Nick began a new life with Phyllis, eventually getting married.
During an ice storm, Phyllis and Jack became stuck in an elevator together. Phyllis went into labor and begged Jack not to let anything happen to the baby. Jack helped Phyllis deliver a healthy baby girl, Summer.
When the evil Sheila Carter came back town, looking exactly like Phyllis, she kidnapped both Lauren and Phyllis and their children. Lauren broke free and grabbed a gun nearby. After much debate on who the real Phyllis was…Lauren shot and killed Sheila. But that wasn’t the only trouble she would endure. After Nick’s plane went down and he went missing, everyone feared that he had died. Nick was eventually found, but was suffering memory loss and didn’t remember being married to Phyllis at all. In fact, he believed he was still married to Sharon and that Cassie was still alive. Phyllis stayed by Nick and helped him slowly regain his memory.
In the midst of everything, Phyllis stood trial for blackmailing Brad Carlton over his affair with Sharon. Phyllis was sentenced to seven years in prison. In 2007, Phyllis was paroled and released for good. Nick and Phyllis continued their marriage and even bought a magazine business, which they called Restless Style. They partnered up with Sharon and her new husband, Jack. But Jack’s meddling caused friction between the foursome and Nick bought Jack and Sharon out.
When Nick’s father, Victor, lost his new wife, Sabrina, he went to Paris to grieve. Nick flew to Paris in search of his dad. Sharon was also there, with their son Noah, for a field trip. Nick and Sharon found each other and decided to tour Paris together. When Phyllis flew to Paris to surprise her husband, she was shocked to find Nick and Sharon kissing on a bridge! She flew home and didn’t tell anyone she was there. When Nick and Sharon returned, Phyllis couldn’t stand all of the flirting and chemistry going on between them. Phyllis finally confessed what she had seen on the bridge. Nick promised to make their marriage work. But when Brad Carlton died while saving Noah from an icy lake, Nick went to find Sharon to tell her.
Sharon had been spending time at the Abbott cabin, trying to deal with her recent divorce from Jack. Nick found her, but was soon informed that the roads were closed and they couldn’t get back until morning. After he told her about Noah, Nick and Sharon began reliving the moment they lost Cassie. It brought them to make love in the cabin. When they returned to the hospital to see Noah, Phyllis realized that her marriage may be over. It seemed almost definite when Sharon found out that she was pregnant!
Phyllis seemed certain that Nick was the father of Sharon’s new baby, even though the paternity hadn’t even been revealed yet. When the truth came out, and Nick was the father, he left Phyllis and tried to start a new life with Sharon. But it wouldn’t last. When Summer was poisoned by Patty Williams, Nick rushed to the hospital with Phyllis to be by her side. Not wanting to separate a family, Sharon told Nick to be with Phyllis and not her.
Nick and Phyllis did eventually split up for good. Phyllis realized that Nick would always care for Sharon, and the couple divorced.
Her next big adventure would be to take on the court system when she found out that Daniel’s daughter, Lucy, had been adopted by Billy Abbott and Victoria Newman. Daniel had been drugged and raped by Sheila’s daughter, Daisy, and did not want the baby. Daisy was on the run and left the baby at a church, where she was sold on the black market. Billy tried to help Victoria, who had just had a miscarriage, and adopted the baby….unknowingly of who its parents were. Daniel soon discovered it, but kept it a secret because he believed that Billy and Victoria were the better parents.
Once it was revealed that Daniel was the actual father, Phyllis began fighting Billy and Victoria for the baby, despite Daniel’s wishes. She even got Daisy to return to town in order for her parental rights to be re-instated. Phyllis won custody of baby Lucy, and Daisy was sent to jail.
