Young and Restless character history:

Karen Taylor arrived in Genoa City as Nikki Newman’s campaign manager, as she was running for state senator of Wisconsin. Nikki lost the election, and Karen began dating the widowed Neil Winters, after taking a job as Director of Beauty of Nature at Newman Enterprises. Neil’s children, Lily and Devon, didn’t seem to approve of Neil and Karen’s relationship, and were somewhat hostile towards Karen. At Neil’s urging, Lily and Devon decided to give her another chance and even invited her to Thanksgiving dinner that year.

In search for a new singer at Indigo, Neil’s club, Neil discovered that Karen had a beautiful voice. He urged her to audition for the singing act at Indigo, but she declined, and another singer was hired. But when the singer was sick on their opening night, Neil turned to karen, begging her to fill in. Karen was very opposed to singing, but eventually, she unwillingly accepted. Right before the show, when Neil was introducing her, she ran away because of her stage fright, therefore the pianist filled in for her. Karen however managed to get over her stage fright when Neil hired Pat Benatar and her husband Neil Giraldo to come and encourage her to forget about her stage fright.

Neil then told Karen that he’s ready to live with her, and they moved in together, but when Lily ended up pregnant by Cane Ashby, Neil intervened. He proposed raising the child with Karen, but Karen was extremely against it, and that’s when problems started. Karen realized that it was too soon for them to live together, and she moved out of Neil’s place. Karen gave Neil a choice to choose between her or the memory of his wife Drucilla. Neil realized he was still in love with Dru and Karen moved away to New York.

A month later, Neil surprised Karen in New York by asking her to marry him, but she rejected him. She did however decide to give him another chance and returned to Genoa City, agreeing to take things slow. She started to show a different side of herself when Devon’s aunt, Tyra Hamilton, came to town and started spending a lot of time with Neil.

Once they thought that Katherine Chancellor had passed away, Neil started thinking about life and decided to propose to Karen, who accepted this time. they set wedding plans for a later daye, but when Tyra’s daughter, Ana, is taken away from her custody, they decided to get married sooner so they can become foster parents for Ana. Neil and Karen married on New Years Eve of 2009.

Karen soon became more jealous of Tyra and Neil’s relationship. Deciding she wanted to create a family with Neil and Ana, Karen suggested they adopt her. Neil is reluctant but does see the benefit of it. But Karen caught Neil kissing Tyra. Karen became even more heartbroken to learn that Neil had slept with Tyra, but she continued to battle to win custody of Ana. However, Neil testified in court against Karen and helped Tyra get custody back of Ana. Karen became furious and packed her bags and left town.
